Aluminum heat transfer plates and application

heat exchange plateHeat is a very valuable commodity especially in places where the winter temperatures plummet to below freezing. The craving for warmth has led to the discovery of the fire.

The modern man has developed newer methods of keeping himself warm during the cold and freezing winter. Instead of lighting fires inside the homes, he has heated water and circulated it through the floors of the house using pipes. In older houses, the water used to circulate in cooper and lead pipes; however, with the increasing prices and toxic effect issues related to cooper and lead, the pipes had to be changed to galvanized steel. However, the steel pipes suffered corrosion and resultantly, the piping for the circulation of the hot water through the floors of the house had to be changed to pipes made of another material which would be more resistant to corrosion. The invention of plastics and other polymers has helped solve this problem of the corrosion but plastic is a bad conductor of heat. In addition, the plastic pipes will provide warmth to only the immediate vicinity of the pipe and not throughout the floor. An ingenious method of spreading the heat through the floor has been developed using PEX heat transfer plate. Aluminum is a metal that retains a heat for a longer time as compared to other metals and given the fact that aluminum is one of the lighter metals it is used extensively in acting as support structures and heat transfer medium for the plastic tubing and piping.

Aluminum heat transfer plate perform three essential functions namely assisting in the conduction of heat away from the tubing and distribution of the same through the joint spaces and along the floor. They also immensely reduce a phenomenon known as back-loss. In common terms, back-loss is a loss of heat from the exposed portion of the pipe. These aluminum heat transfer plates also provide valuable support to the plastic tubing, which is known to sag especially if the circulated water is at a higher temperature.

The shape of the aluminum heat transfer plate dependents on the thickness of the pipe that has to nestle within. In addition, the thickness of the plates determines the extent of the heat retention and distribution.
