Installing PEX tubing. How to make a PEX crimp connection?

PEX is a type of flexible tubing which is commonly used in plumbing applications. It is also called as cross linked Polyethylene. This tubing offers more advantages over the conventional PVC piping and in few applications it proves to be cost efficient. PEX tubing is quite flexible to be easily installed. It consumes less time to be installed and produces less wastage. In order to install a PEX piping, a special tool called PEX crimping tool is required. One can also take this tool on rent as it is only required for installation and this provision is provided at many hardware stores.

Following PEX tools are required to install PEX Tubing
  • 1) PEX tubing
  • 2) PEX cutter
  • 3) PEX crimp tool
  • 4) PEX crimp rings
  • 5) PEX fittings
  • 6) PEX decrimping tool

STEP 1
One needs to cut the PEX tubing in such a manner that it has an even and a smooth cut. One can achieve this by, positioning the cutter at 90 degree to tubing.

STEP 2
This step involves sliding the PEX crimp ring over the tubing approx 2 past ends.

STEP 3
One needs to insert the PEX fitting into the tubing in such a way so that the shoulder's of the PEX fitting touches the PEX tubing.

STEP 4
One needs to position the PEX crimp ring ¼- 1/8 from the end of PEX tubing. In this manner the crimp ring would lie right above PEX fitting barbs.

STEP 5
In this step one needs to open the jaws of the PEX crimp tool.

STEP 6
PEX crimp tool should be positioned over crimp tool evenly at 90 degree to PEX tubing. The jaws of the tool should remain in centre over crimp ring and should remain in place.

STEP 7
Close the jaws of the crimp tool completely.

STEP 8
Connection gets complete in this step.

STEP 9
One can check the connection with go no go gauge. This will make sure that if the connection was done correctly. If the go no go gauge cannot fit the crimp ring, this shows that the connection needs to be done again. The process to install PEX tubing is similar for oxygen barrier PEX and non barrier PEX. The steps described above can suitably be done for all the types of PEX tubing (PEX A, PEX B, PEX C) irrespective of any color or brand. The crimp connection is quite common among DIY's. One can also thank to "go no go gauge" to check the connection completely; such a choice is not provided by any other method. If someone is working with threaded or sweats fittings, transition part needs to be connected before.
